my source is pure comparison.
when I find something at a hobbie shop I think would look cool as an alternative playing piece, I will bring one of each original Axis playing pieces with me to the store where I found the possible new unit or piece, and compare them.
also I have been shown items that I think would be of great use: as in your collection of Pewter craft miniatures, or the ships Skip used to create his custom playing pieces.

as far as I can tell, 1/72 is closer to 20mm/HO scale.
I once viewed a size comparison chart on a hobbie store website(the name slips me) that listed 1/72 as being 13.88mm.

when placing 1/72 scale troops next to Axis troops, the 1/72 troops stand just a hair taller. not bad at all in my perspective.

as far as aircraft, 1/300 is larger than a Axis plane, but not so much that it ruins the "feel" or "visual" aspect of the units.
Pewter Craft is by far the best product out there.

1/2400 naval pieces are great and really add great detail and realism to the game. GHQ is my first choice here.

1/285 GHQ tanks rock! some of their units are a little smaller than the original pieces but others are a near perfect match.

it's all really a matter of personal taste, wouldn't you agree?
